Health Talk Topic : Strep Throat
Strep throat is a disease common among children and teenagers. It is caused by a bacterial infection characterized by a swollen, sudden and severe sore throat and tonsils. Not all sore throats are strep throats; in fact they are different because an ordinary sore throat is caused by a viral infection and will usually clear up on their own without any medication.
Strep throat is contagious and can be passed down from person to person especially when an uninfected person inhales the tiny droplets that an infected person has coughed, sneezed or breathed. Other symptoms include fever, pain when you swallow, swollen lymph nodes, rashes and white or yellow spots on the back of the throat.
If left untreated, it could lead to other serious health diseases like rheumatic fever which can cause permanent damage to the heart, scarlet fever, kidney disease or blood infection. Antibiotics for 10 days is usually prescribed by a doctor as medication for strep throat. You should make sure to finish taking the antibiotics even if you feel better or else some bacteria can remain and the symptoms will return.
