Health Talk Topic : Thyroid Disorder
The thyroid is a small gland located in front of the neck, below the Adam’s apple in the neck. The thyroid is responsible for the hormones that affects your body’s metabolism and energy level. The two most common thyroid disorders are hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism is also referred to as having an overactive thyroid. It is a condition in which the body’s thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone over a short or long period of time. The treatment is usually dependent on the severity of the condition. It is usually treated by taking anti-thyroid medications or in extreme cases, surgery to remove the thyroid.
Hypothyroidism is the opposite of hyperthyroidism as it is the condition where the the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Also known as having an under active thyroid. Treatment also varies but it is usually through taking thyroid replacement therapy.
