Pioneer Home Care Health Updates Common Age-Related Eye Diseases : A large portion of the baby boomer population is beginning to get older and develop age-related eye diseases. Millions are already struggling with an eye disease and about 25 million people over the age of 40 have cataracts while another 2.5 million suffer from glaucoma. It isn't uncommon for eye diseases to seemingly appear out of nowhere, so if you or your loved one develop one of these inconvenient conditions, Pioneer Home Care in-home senior care can provide help. Cataracts are the most common eye disease and, unfortunately, there is no cure. The only way to effectively treat cataracts is surgery. After an individual turns 40, clumps of protein can form in the lens of the eye and cause a cloudy look, leading to loss of vision that glasses and eyewear cannot correct. Glaucoma is another common age-related eye condition and the risk increases for those over age 45. Those who have a family history of the disease, are nearsighted or farsighted, have diabetes, get migraines or have low blood pressure are at even greater risk. Treatment for glaucoma includes using eye drops to lower pressure and surgery is sometimes used to create a better flow of fluid out of the eye. People between the ages of 40 and 54 should have an eye exam every 2 to 4 years while those ages 55 and up should schedule those annually or every two to three years. The Most Important Nutrients for Seniors: Proper nutrition is important at any age, but for seniors it can play an even bigger role in overall health. Including the right foods in an older adult's diet is a critical aspect of senior care, because not getting the right nutrients can not only make it difficult to manage certain chronic conditions, but it also may put seniors at a greater risk for fatigue and other maladies. Meal preparation is often a cornerstone of senior care, and there are a few things that should be taken into consideration when crafting a senior's healthy diet. Perhaps most importantly, caregivers should make a point to limit the sodium content of their patients' food. Keeping sodium content low will help seniors manage their blood pressure, which is often one of the greatest risk factors for cardiovascular conditions such as heart disease and stroke. To avoid high-sodium foods, caregivers should focus on fruits and vegetables. It's also important for seniors to eat nutrient-dense foods. Some of the best nutrients include calcium, vitamin D and potassium, but omega-3 fatty acids may offer the most benefits. Commonly found in fish, but also present in kidney beans, flaxseed and spinach, the nutrient has been tied to everything from better heart health to improved cognitive function. Eating the right foods is key to senior health for many reasons. According to the National Institutes of Health, a healthy diet will provide seniors with more energy and help them stave off diseases. Breath Test for Heart Disease : Early diagnosis is often the key to effectively treating most healthy conditions, and new research from the Respiratory Institute at Cleveland Clinic found that a simple breath test might be able to accurately diagnose heart disease. While the study is still in its earliest stages, experts are hopeful the results could be a breakthrough in cardiovascular health management, Fox News reports. The findings were published recently in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and are based on a small sample of subjects, but the results were certainly encouraging. Researchers determined that they were able to diagnose heart disease by analyzing the presence of volatile organic compounds in a subject's breath. The team says it has been able to diagnose the condition with almost perfect accuracy in its limited trial. "Every individual has a breath print that differentiates them from other people, depending on what's going on in their body, " study author Dr. Raed Dweik told Health Day. "And that print can tell us a lot about a person, what they've been exposed to and what disease they have." Implementing such a simple test could dramatically change the way healthcare providers address heart disease, something which could have a substantial impact on many people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 600, 000 people die from heart disease each year. Aging and the Dangers of Loneliness : There are many physical, emotional, and psychological factors affecting the quality of health in seniors. Aging comes with a variety of physical problems. To alleviate these challenges, seniors often move to nursing homes or have in-home care to help them with their ailments and day-to-day activities. A senior’s mental health can seriously impact their physical well-being and loneliness can play a big part in that. Seniors often experience feelings of loneliness and depression that have a severe negative impact on their health. The Indian Psychological Association reported that an estimated 12 million Indians, aged 65 and older, live alone. Unfortunately, the likelihood that many seniors are living without a spouse, significant other, or children is alarming when you consider the fact that this is where most social interaction comes from. Our number of social connections becomes increasingly smaller as we age. Some reasons for this include: 1. Retirement from the workforce 2. Death of friends & family 3. Lack of physical ability 4. Loss of driving privileges 5. Poor health When a person’s social interaction becomes limited, loneliness and depression can become overwhelming. Loneliness affects us emotionally, but can also affect us neurologically. Cognitive decline and the risk of developing dementia has been linked to perceived loneliness, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences states that both social isolation and loneliness are associated with increased mortality. They also report that illnesses and conditions such as chronic lung disease, arthritis, impaired mobility, and depression can be attributed to social isolation. This puts a big spotlight on the importance of identifying and dealing with loneliness early. We know that depression only worsens social isolation and in turn keeps people from participating in social events, being active, and being of service – all of which can seriously diminish the feelings of loneliness. It’s important for aging adults and the people that care for them to understand how loneliness can affect a person 65 or older, and how to prevent that emotional and physical wear. Ways To Reduce Effects Of Loneliness: Seniors can immediately begin to feel overall improvement in their emotional state and quality of life by increasing social involvement and there are several ways that can happen. Volunteering – being of service and being involved in the community are two ways that people can find social interaction. Helping people in hospitals, community care centers, and children’s programs are great ways for older citizens to find appreciation and feel a sense of involvement. Community Activities – community activities like farmer’s markets, support groups, and sports groups are a great way for seniors to make friends and develop connections. For retired individuals, many towns and cities provide opportunity for seniors to connect with younger people to be mentors and sponsors and find fulfillment. Senior Neighborhoods – living in a 55 and older neighborhood with other retirees is a great place to meet new people and build connections. Since these neighborhoods only allow a certain age group to move in, there is less stress for seniors who cannot handle a noisy or busy neighborhood. Companion Home Care - companionship is another option that will improve overall well being. Often companionship is accomplished while participating in the above activities, but venturing out may be too physically demanding. Companion home care can be a great solution in your own home. Stimulating conversation, games, light exercise, even someone to watch TV with can lift spirits and ease loneliness. There are so many ways that seniors can find fulfillment when they don’t have family or friends nearby. Making friends and developing different connections is a great way decrease loneliness and depression and help improve quality of life and health. Remind yourself to get up, get active, and get out there! Life is happening – you just need to reach out to it. Visit www.pioneerhomecare.in to learn more.
