While the study is still in its earliest stages, experts are hopeful the results could be a breakthrough in cardiovascular health management, Fox News reports. The findings were published recently in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and are based on a small sample of subjects, but the results were certainly encouraging. Researchers determined that they were able to diagnose heart disease by analyzing the presence of volatile organic compounds in a subject's breath. The team says it has been able to diagnose the condition with almost perfect accuracy in its limited trial. "Every individual has a breath print that differentiates them from other people, depending on what's going on in their body, " study author Dr. Raed Dweik told Health Day. "And that print can tell us a lot about a person, what they've been exposed to and what disease they have." Implementing such a simple test could dramatically change the way healthcare providers address heart disease, something which could have a substantial impact on many people. A study recently published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research found that knee replacement surgery is closely tied to weight gain, Reuters reports. The research analyzed the medical records of nearly 1, 000 patients from the Mayo Clinic. The team found that 30 percent of those who had the procedure gained approximately 5 percent of their body weight in the five years after surgery. Experts hope the findings are a clear message to patients and senior care providers to place an emphasis on staying active after surgery. "We need to encourage patients to take advantage of their ability to function better and get them to take on a more active lifestyle, " Joseph Zeni, a physical therapy professor at the University of Delaware, told Reuters. The weeks after knee replacement surgery are crucial, and it's up to both patients and those providing home care to ensure the treatment is as successful as possible. Surgeons will offer strict orders on what to follow in terms of diet, while physical therapists will provide advice on exercises. According to the Mayo Clinic, the therapy usually starts off with a graduated walking program before resuming normal household activities. The average age of those people was 81 years old. The people whose diet choices adhered closely to the MIND diet had a 53% reduced risk for developing Alzheimer’s. The Warning Signs of Skin Cancer : Most of us wouldn’t consider spending a day out in the sun without first applying sunscreen; some of us even follow our doctor’s advice and wear it every day. But just a few decades ago, people thought much differently. The bronze glow of a tan was so desirable that sun worshippers slathered themselves with baby oil or cocoa butter and lay in the sun’s rays all summer. The stores sold “suntan lotion” designed to attract the sun, not “sunscreen” to protect against it. The sunscreens that were available had SPFs (sun protection factors) of 2, 4, 8 or 15-- compared to today, when they start at 15, and range to 100. Unfortunately, the sun worship of yesterday comes with a price today. Too much exposure to the sun and frequent sunburns increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Certain types of skin cancer can be deadly if not caught early. So, it’s up to you to be on the lookout for signs of the disease. Do a complete head-to-check every month and look for any of the following: 1. Changes in the way your skin looks 2. New itchiness, tenderness, or pain 3. Sores that won’t heal or heal and come back 4. Rough, scaly, bleeding or oozing patches of skin 5. Wart-like growths or other bumps 6. Changes in the size, shape or color of existing moles 7. New moles If you are a caregiver to an elderly relative, be sure to check for changes in their skin, too. Inspect areas of skin you can see – such as the face, neck, hands, arms and legs. If you find anything that looks suspicious on your skin or that of loved one, be sure and see a doctor or dermatologist so if it is cancer, it can be treated right away. Aging and the Dangers of Loneliness : There are many physical, emotional, and psychological factors affecting the quality of health in seniors. Aging comes with a variety of physical problems. Six Simple Workouts for Seniors As we age, exercise becomes more important to stave off weakness and mobility issues. While many studies focus on keeping our minds sharp, we also need to continue to strengthen our bodies. Cardio works one of the most important muscles in our bodies: our heart. Strength training is not only helpful to keep our other muscles from getting smaller and weaker; it also helps to regulate glucose metabolism – which is great to try to counteract diabetes. Balance issues can be improved with regular stretching, even as little as five to 10 minutes a day. A loss of balance can lead to more falls. And if you haven’t heard this before, falls are the number one cause of injury among seniors, causing everything from cuts and bruises to hip fractures and head trauma. Don’t forget about the abs, which is also referred to as your core. You don’t need to have a six-pack. Weak abs can lead to back issues. Here's a list of recommended workouts for the senior set: 1. Cardio At least 30 minutes of moderate cardio exercise a day This includes brisk walking, running, swimming, biking, or exercise videos If you don't have time in your day for the full 30 minutes, try three 10 minute bouts of exercise throughout the day 2. Strength training Work those muscles twice a week for 30 to 45 minutes. Pushups (if you're a beginner, do them against a wall to start) Using a resistance band that is light weight and inexpensive Bicep curls and tricep extensions Modified squats and lunges that work many muscles at once 3. Flexibility training To start the day, try some head circles and stretching in the shower At the end of day, stretch calf muscles and hamstrings 4. Balance training You can do this standing in line at the grocery store Stand on one leg and see if you can let go of the shopping cart Hold for about 10 seconds Try standing on your tippy-toes and holding for a few seconds Balance should be done everyday — all you need is two to three minutes 5. Core training Try a few minutes of abdominal exercises Reverse curl while you're lying in back and pull your knees into you Hold for five seconds and release Start with ten reps a day and work your way higher Crunches are key — not full sit-ups — because some people can do more damage than good Keep back on the floor and don't go all the way up Concentrate so you can feel your abdominal wall contracting Before starting any new workout program, check with your doctor.
